Program
Ready to Respond provides a coordinated system for recruiting
and deploying spontaneous volunteers for disaster response
in the San Francisco Bay Area.
When A Disaster
Strikes
The heart of the system is a clearinghouse for spontaneous
volunteers and agencies that need volunteers at the time of
a disaster. When a disaster strikes, Volunteer Centers activate
a phone bank, call 1-800-VOLUNTEER, walk-in center or online
access in each affected county. Staff proactively contact
nonprofit and government agencies to determine their needs
and then match volunteers' skills and availability with appropriate
jobs.
Training and Technical
Assistance
Ready to Respond offers workshops on disaster volunteer management
for nonprofit and government agencies, plus follow-up technical
assistance. Training topics include readiness for large numbers
of volunteers and development of job descriptions for spontaneous
volunteers. Ready to Respond also offers other resources,
including Getting Ready for Disaster Volunteers, a how-to
guide for community-based organizations, as well as downloadable
forms and tools (see Resources).
Planning and Preparedness
Ready to Respond works continuously to strengthen the system
and ensure its readiness to respond. Training and exercises
keep staff skills sharp and a media plan helps get messages
out quickly when a disaster occurs.
