Help Stamp Out Hunger

Posted on May 9, 2011, by United Way in Partners

You can help stamp out hunger! - The largest one-day food drive in the country will take place right at your door on Saturday, May 14, as the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) holds its 19th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” drive.

Supported by United Ways around the country, this annual food drive is one of the simplest and easiest food drives that you can support. Just leave a sturdy bag or box of non-perishable food items by your mailbox this Saturday, and your letter carrier will pick it up along his/her normal route.

Donate items like canned meats, fish, soup, vegetables, bottled juice, pasta, cereal and rice - foods that do not require refrigeration. Please do not include items that have expired or are in glass containers.

In 2010, the NALC drive collected more than 77.1 million pounds of food donations, pushing the historical total for this drive to more than one billion pounds of food.

A recent survey conducted by Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger relief organization, found that nearly half, or 46%, of households served reported having to choose between paying a utility bill or purchasing food.

So, while you are jotting down your grocery shopping list this week, please remember Bay Area households in need and include some of the above items on your list. Then leave them out by your mailbox next Saturday.
