Spotlight: Anna Mok, Managing Partner at Deloitte

May 23, 2017

Meet Anna Mok. She developed an active and high-caliber career while taking on side projects like, oh, saving the world and fighting Bay Area poverty with United Way.

As a Managing Partner with Deloitte, she is frequently asked to speak on global business, governance, risk, finance, and leadership matters. In her “free” time, she serves on several nonprofit boards and committees, including United Way Bay Area’s (UWBA) Board of Directors.

Mok’s motivation for serving on the UWBA Board is due to her alignment with the organization’s mission: supporting community development initiatives that deliver long-term, systematic, and sustained changes that break the cycle of generational poverty.

Throughout her career, Mok has received numerous recognitions, including the Jefferson Award for Community Service, San Francisco Business Times Most Influential Women & Forever Influential Awards, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Minority Leader Award.

We are grateful for Mok’s service to our organization and that she took time out of her schedule to share why she supports social impact in her community.

Do you remember a moment in your life when everything changed for the better?

I feel fortunate to have had numerous such moments in my life. One of the first moments occurred when I was around seven or eight at the grand opening celebration for my parents’ first restaurant. It wasn’t a very large restaurant, but it was ours. My family immigrated to San Francisco to create more opportunities for my family. The restaurant represented years of savings and hard work and was also an opportunity for our family to work together for our future. Life was very challenging during those years but they were also filled with laughter and happy memories.

Everyday United Way helps Bay Area residents make life changing moments — why is it important for you to support others in making their moment?

Helping others reach their full potential in educational and economic attainment has been a focus of my community work. United Way’s focus on alleviating poverty, in particular, the challenges of the working poor, is very much aligned with my personal focus. As an immigrant who grew up in San Francisco with two working parents, I recognize how much effort it takes to have these “moments.” United Way can play an important role to create more of these moments and shorten the time it takes to achieve them.

During your service on the board, what has been the most important UWBA achievement you’ve experienced?

The execution of the strategic vision, in particular the success of the United Way programs like SparkPoint and the merger of UWBA & UWSV, have been highlights.

Would you recommend your friends and family support UWBA? Why?

Yes. It is a well led organization and its size and scale allows us to make impacts that others cannot.
