Breaking the cycle of poverty

EFFECTIVE POVERTY-FIGHTING PROGRAMS

United Way Bay Area operates and invests in effective poverty-fighting programs. Together with our multi-sector partners, we make sure that individuals and families in the Bay Area have the support and resources they need to build the life they deserve. The Bay Area Latinx/ Hispanic population has the highest percentage (45%) among its demographic group that lives in poverty. However, there are vast racial differences that exist among racial groups according to the US Census Bureau 2015 data – 18% of White people live in poverty compared to 42% of Black/African American or 45% of Hispanic/Latinx families or 21% of Asians. And because we know that, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and Pacific Islander, and other communities of color have been systemically barred from economic opportunity, we take a racial justice lens in our grantmaking, partnerships, and programming.
