Taxes are hard. We make it easy.

UWBA is proud to announce that our Earn It! Keep It! Save It! (EKS) program is now in its 16th year of assisting low- to moderate-income Bay Area residents with free tax preparation. Last year, thanks to the support of nearly 3,000 volunteers and the generosity of United Way Bay Area donors and partners, EKS helped secure $80 million in tax refunds for over 72,000 Bay Area households. Almost $23 million of these refunds came in the form of Earned Income Tax Credits. Watch video.

EKS centers help families access the California Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which leverages the federal EITC in the communities that need it the most.

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is the most effective anti-poverty tool in America,” said Kelly Batson, United Way Bay Area Vice President of Operations, “United Way is proud to lead the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! coalition and support the work of 3,000+ volunteers changing lives one tax return at a time. In addition to the tax refunds, we are saving families and individuals millions of dollars in tax preparation fees.”

With the support of trained, IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers, EKS centers provide free tax preparation to individuals and families earning less than $54,000 per year at more than 200 locations throughout the eight Bay Area counties—Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Solano.

In 2018, with the support of Citi Community Development, EKS is offering a convenient, new “drop-off” tax preparation service throughout the Bay Area. Visit www.earnitkeepitsaveit.org for intake locations.

“For those living on lower incomes, tax time offers a key opportunity to benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit, a significant cash infusion that can be used to pay down debt, buy necessary household items or start saving for the future,” said Vicki Joseph, Northern California Market Manager for Citi Community Development. “By providing access to free, convenient drop-off tax preparation services to eligible lower-income households, Earn It! Keep It! Save It! is connecting thousands of Bay Area residents to an important resource to build their financial resiliency.”
