What does it take to walk into a job interview feeling ready?
For many Bay Area residents, it’s not just preparation—it’s access.
Access to professional clothing.
Access to guidance.
Access to a moment where someone says: you belong in that room.
That’s what came to life at a recent Dress for Success event hosted by United Way Bay Area’s Women United in partnership with Tommy Hilfiger.
But this wasn’t just a one-day event.
It was one entry point into something bigger.
At its surface, the event offered hands-on support: professional attire for job interviews, resume guidance, and one-on-one encouragement from volunteers.

Inside the store, clients worked with volunteers to find outfits that reflected not just professionalism, but possibility.
And the impact was immediately evident.
I spent some time outside the dressing rooms watching each client come out in their outfits, and they were beaming and all hyping each other up.
Because confidence isn’t a small thing when you’re stepping into a new opportunity. It’s often the difference between showing up and holding back.
Events like Dress for Success don’t happen in isolation.
They’re made possible through partnerships, community investment, and a shared commitment to expanding opportunity across the Bay Area.
And they reflect something deeper:
A belief that when people are given the tools, support, and respect they deserve, they can take the next step forward—and keep going.
Events like these can easily miss the mark.
Without intention, they risk feeling transactional—or worse, performative.
That’s why this one was designed differently.

From how clients were welcomed, to how volunteers were prepared, the focus was on creating an experience rooted in dignity and mutual respect—not charity.
That intention mattered.
It created a space where participants weren’t just receiving support—they were part of a community, encouraging one another and sharing in each other’s success.
We’re here today to give back to the community… supporting them with their fashion needs, their resumes… and we look forward to more events like this in the Bay Area.

An outfit alone doesn’t change someone’s trajectory.
Access does.
Across the Bay Area, many people face barriers to employment that have nothing to do with talent – such as the cost of professional clothing, limited access to career guidance, or financial instability that makes it harder to focus on long-term goals.
Moments like these help break down some of those barriers.
And through United Way Bay Area’s broader efforts – ranging from financial coaching to resource navigation – those moments can lead to lasting pathways toward stability and mobility.
That’s where the real impact happens.
Not in a single event, but in how that moment becomes a step forward.
Thousands of people across the Bay Area are working toward stability, opportunity, and a better future for themselves and their families.
Moments like this can be the start.
Community support transforms moments into momentum.
