Use IRS Direct File to Prepare Your Taxes

Access IRS Direct File

Please fill out the form below to access IRS Direct File. Upon submission you will instantly be provided with access.

Steps You Will Do

  1. Check your eligibility for IRS Direct File.
  2. If you’re eligible, you’ll go to ID.me to sign in or create an account. Your personal info (name, date of birth, SSN or ITIN) will then pre-populate from ID.me into your federal tax return so you won’t have to re-enter it!
  3. You’ll complete your federal return in IRS Direct File by answering some questions about yourself, marital status, people you support, income, etc. Direct File saves you some time by importing your W-2 info from the IRS, if it’s available.
  4. Review the imported data before submitting your return!
  5. Once your return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS, you can download a copy of your tax return for your own records!
  6. Prepare and e-file your CA state return in CalFile.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

I’ve never prepared my return before. Is this for me?

Yes! IRS Direct File was designed for taxpayers with simple cases. It’s an easy-to-use tool, mobile-friendly, and even has IRS chat support specialists available as you work on your return. No special training is required!

Will someone be preparing my return?

Using the self-prep option, you will be preparing your own return for free through a user-friendly tool with the IRS. Our screenshot guide gives you a glimpse into each step of the process but the platform is so easy-to-use, following a guide is not necessary. You can also contact IRS as you work on your return – they have live agents available to assist.

I'm not ready to do this. Where are the in-person site options?

We have in-person site options across all 8 Bay Area Counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Solano.

You can find a tax site convenient for your location and schedule using the tax site listings on our website or through an interactive searchable map.

You can also dial "211" on your phone to get help and real-time support from a trained resource specialist.

Additional Notes:

  • Apply for or renew your ITIN as soon as possible to avoid delays. Processing may take several months.
  • You do NOT need to pay to renew or apply for an ITIN if you are using one of our VITA CAA approved sites.
  • If you previously submitted a renewal application and it was approved, you do not need to renew it again.
