At United Way Bay Area (UWBA), our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is not just a guiding principle—it is woven into the fabric of our daily work. In today’s climate, where DEI efforts face increased scrutiny and challenges, we recognize that remaining engaged in this work is more crucial than ever.

In September, we hosted the webinar DEI or Die: The Critical State of DEI Across Sectors. This powerful conversation brought together thought leaders from public media, government, education, and corporate sectors to discuss the landscape, challenges, and opportunities in advancing DEI.

Moderated by Mia Henry, CEO of Freedom Lifted, the discussion delved into critical issues such as the rising backlash against DEI initiatives, the significance of data-driven advocacy, and the evolving strategies organizations need to implement to ensure long-term equity efforts. Panelists—Dr. Larissa Estes, Executive Director of the California Racial Equity Commission; Eric Abrams, Chief DEI Officer at KQED; and Dr. Janice Gassam Asare, Founder of BWG Business Solutions—offered insights on maintaining progress despite external resistance, the vital role of embedding DEI into organizational structures, and the impact of collective action in sustaining this work.

We acknowledge that the current moment is in constant flux. However, these insights provide valuable guidance, which is why we are making this important conversation available to the public. Watch the full webinar to gain deeper insights into the present state of DEI, hear from experts on the frontlines, and discover actionable steps you can take to support this work in your own organization and community.

What we know is that it has been studied and proven time and again that diversity at all levels of a company or organization improves profitability and employee retention and expands the development of innovative ideas.

We encourage you to keep the conversation going after watching by following us on social media and exploring The Journey, our curated collection of books, podcasts, films, and other resources created to help individuals and organizations enhance their understanding and expression of DEI principles.

The path toward justice is not a short one, but it is one worth walking—together. Stay engaged, stay informed, and most importantly, stay committed.
